The Catholic Community Foundation Celebrates Serving 40 Years In The Diocese Of Phoenix

Tempe, Arizona — This year marks a major milestone for the Catholic Community Foundation as we celebrate our 40th year of serving religious, educational, and charitable objectives in the Diocese of Phoenix. As a private 501(c)(3) not-for-profit financial and Canonical institution, our mission is to encourage compassionate, charitable giving to provide sustainable support for those who serve our community.

Founded in 1983, the Catholic Community Foundation has occupied a unique place among Arizona philanthropic organizations by providing a source through which donors can make living and testamentary gifts to benefit their charitable objectives and sustain the works of parishes, schools, agencies, and outreach programs of the Diocese. Created by Bishop Thomas O’Brien to provide ongoing financial support for Catholic education and other ministries, the Catholic Community Foundation has grown to include many other initiatives yet remains true to its Catholic mission to carry on the work of Christ by fostering philanthropy.

The core of our organization specializes in endowment and grant fund management, as well as estate planning. The Catholic Community Foundation has often been referred to as the “best kept secret in the Diocese.” By providing philanthropic services customized to individual charitable goals, the Foundation assists donors and organizations in ensuring a promising financial future.

2023 marks a major milestone for the Catholic Community Foundation as we celebrate our 40th anniversary. The number "40" holds profound biblical significance, symbolizing a period of testing, trial, and ultimate triumph. Biblical examples include: Moses lived 40 years in Egypt and 40 years in the desert before God selected him to lead His people out of slavery. The Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years after fleeing the Egyptians. Kings David and Solomon reigned for 40 years.

From our humble beginnings to the robust range of programs we now offer the Catholic Community Foundation is the trusted organization for faith-filled charitable giving. Our structure fosters a culture of accountability and transparency. As a publicly supported charity, we manage financial resources in an ethical manner so that donated funds are used for their intended purposes—forever. We have seen great growth over our 40 years, with approximately 600 funds managed and nearly $115,000,000 in charitable assets. In fact, over $50,000,000 of the growth has happened in the past five years.

The Catholic Community Foundation continues to focus on engaging our diverse community through Planned Giving Educational Seminars and Endowment Drives. Since the Foundation’s inception, endowments are at the heart of our mission, making the Catholic Community Foundation a responsible choice for many nonprofit organizations. The Foundation has an impressive track record throughout our 40 years of investing experience, making us a good partner for organizations of any size. Because all funds are 99% Catholic screened, the Catholic Community Foundation offers diversification of risk within a well-balanced, $115 million portfolio. The Foundation follows the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) socially responsible investment guidelines to ensure your investments are consistent with our Catholic faith and does not invest in companies that operate contrary to Catholic teachings. Our staff maintains rigorous attention to benchmarks and close monitoring of all funds held. Whether assets are $25,000 or $2.5 million, organizations and individuals have peace of mind knowing their investments are protected from public and private liability or any other litigation. Currently, the Foundation oversees $65 million in endowments for 150 organizations and manages an additional $50 million across 225 individual funds.
