Fr. Doug Lorig was a beloved priest in our diocese and the first pastoral provision priest. He was a former Episcopal Priest who converted to the Catholic faith along with his wife and four children in 1979. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1984. Serving the Diocese of Phoenix for 32 years, his resume is astounding.

He served as a teacher at St. Mark's Catholic School and Seton Catholic Preparatory High School. He then helped establish Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Queen Creek. He served St. Thomas the Apostle Byzantine Parish in Gilbert and then the pastor at St. Anne. He was also the spiritual director of the Arizona Marian Conference for many years. Fr. Doug kept a prayer journal of people he prayed for, both living and deceased, as well as vocations.

"He impacted so many people in their spiritual life and there are many priests that can attest to his influence," Donna Shomen explained. Donna was a good friend of Fr. Doug and created an endowment for vocations, in his name and memory with the Foundation; the Fr. Doug Lorig Memorial Endowment. "Without priests, there is no Catholic Church. We desperately need the next generation of holy men and women with vocations, to carry the Church into the future."

Fr. Matt Lowry, Chaplain of the Holy Trinity Catholic Newman Center at NAU, credited Fr. Doug to cause him to seriously discern a vocation to the priesthood. "I heard Fr. Doug give a talk when I was a freshman in college and it caused me to ask myself for the first time, What if God is calling me to be a priest?"

You can help the call of vocations. Currently, there are 38 seminarians, in various stages, in our diocese that need our financial help. Let's help them so that we can receive the Sacraments and grow in our relationship with God.

A $25,000 gift match has been placed to raise funds for the vocations office in the Diocese of Phoenix. Join Donna Shomen in this incredible opportunity! Donate today.
