As we reflect on 2018, the Catholic Community Foundation for the Diocese of Phoenix is proud to have played an instrumental role in many significant initiatives that have supported our Catholic Christian community. Thanks to generous donors, the Foundation was able to provide more than $2.9 million in assistance through all of our charitable giving programs.
The Foundation awarded $145,000 in grants to seven local Catholic organizations through our Catholic Leadership Circle Grants Program. While these grants provided significant community impact, due to a lack of available funds, we had to turn away 21 deserving Catholic agencies who had requested more than $400,000.
Recognizing the need for additional funding to address these grant requests, we are launching our Eternal Life Endowment Program throughout the Diocese. These funds are designed to engage donors in joining the Foundation and its mission by endowing financial gifts to benefit future generations. Our goal is to not only increase the amount of funds available to other Catholic nonprofits during our grants cycle, but also to be positioned to respond to the greatest needs in our community year-round.
The Foundation provided more than $317,000 in service-based scholarships to deserving local middle school students who dream of attending one of the seven Diocesan Catholic High Schools through our longstanding Christian Service Awards Program. We are particularly grateful to Ann McClain who, through a very generous estate gift, has created a new needs-based endowed scholarship program that will provide an additional $112,000 per year in scholarship funds in perpetuity. This new scholarship program will assist Catholic families who struggle financially to afford to send their children to Catholic school. These families have a great desire to have their children participate in the benefits of a faith-based education. Will you join the Foundation and Ann McClain to help grow the scholarship program?
In addition to our grant and scholarship activities, the Foundation hosted the 30th Anniversary of the Catholic Community Foundation’s Crozier Gala where we celebrated cherished relationships, built up and nurtured over the many years, that reflect the dignity and value of all who support our work and all whom we serve. The event provided more than $220,000 in scholarship funds benefiting the children of teachers and employees, who lovingly serve in our schools, parishes and other Catholic ministries here in the Diocese.
The Catholic Community Foundation is grateful that we have been able to assist so many individuals in need in the Diocese of Phoenix – but our work is never done. As we set our goals for 2019, we look forward to having an even greater impact in the Diocese. The Foundation will continue to identify and connect philanthropic donors and partners whose interest is to invest financially and spiritually in our community, and to help us to grow our efforts by supporting our brothers and sisters in Christ for many years to come. Our goal is to increase our capacity to meet the community’s needs and to develop transformational solutions that make a difference for all in the Diocese of Phoenix.
I am eager to meet with faithful individuals, businesses and Catholic community leaders to share thoughts on how the Foundation can play an even greater role as the conduit for philanthropy in our diocese in 2019. Please feel free to contact me at 602-354-2401 if you would like to discuss the Foundation and how you can participate in enhancing our community.
Yours in Christ,
Dcn. James Carabajal
