John & Mary Louise Campo
John and Mary Louise Campo met in 1953. They’ll soon celebrate their 60-year wedding anniversary, having wed at St. Agnes Parish in Phoenix in 1958.
After their wedding, they moved to New York where John continued school and Mary worked full-time. Shortly before finding out John’s final exam results, they moved back to Phoenix with a commitment. Because they hadn’t contributed to their church as much as they’d have liked, they agreed that, should John pass his exams, they’d give the money they’d have used to travel back east directly to the church.
They also made a second, more personal commitment to God following years of unsuccessful attempts to start a family. If He wanted them to adopt a child, they would: they adopted their first daughter Lisa. Immediately afterward, Mary Lou found out she was carrying her first son, John. Five years later, they again adopted Stacy. God, never outdone in generosity, honored their commitment, and soon blessed them with another pregnancy.
Grateful for their adoption through Catholic Social Services, John volunteered his legal services to them for 10 years.
For the last 50 years the couple has given their time talent and treasure to the following Catholic organizations:
- St. Thomas the Apostle
- St. Thomas “Building Virtues” campaign
- The Christ Child Society
- St. Vincent DePaul
- Mission of Mercy
- helping purchase the Mount Claret property and creating the first casita designated to serve older priests
- funding and facilitating their alma mater, St. Mary’s, move to a new location
- establishing the “Prepare Him Room, All Saints Catholic Newman Center” at Arizona State University,
- helping Alabama’s “Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration” nuns relocate to Arizona to live and work
John and Mary Lou have selflessly and wholeheartedly dedicated their lives to God, their family, and the Diocese of Phoenix.
Recipients are chosen by the growing cohort of past Bishop’s Crozier Lifetime Leadership & Service Award recipients and the Nominating and Governance Committee of the CCF Board. Recipients are selected for their notable service to the Catholic charitable, educational and/or evangelical work. The award recognizes specific outstanding initiatives as well as bodies of work and lifetime achievement and is presented annually at the Catholic Community Foundation’s Crozier Gala, in the Diocese of Phoenix.
The honoree or couple is selected based on distinguished service and support of the Catholic community in the Diocese of Phoenix and beyond. The selection committee considers accomplishments, achievements and contributions to qualify this person to receive the Crozier Lifetime Leadership & Service Award based on the results of his or her efforts at the national, diocesan, parish, school and community level. Other at-large services, board memberships, offices held and awards given are also be considered in the CCF’s successful candidate recipient.
