Bishop’s Crozier Award for Lifetime Leadership & Service

Presented by Blue Cross® Blue Shield® of Arizona*

The Catholic Community Foundation’s Bishop’s Crozier Award for Lifetime Leadership & Service sheds light on the timeless and multifaceted issues we embrace in the practice of our Catholic faith by celebrating the visionaries who have laid the foundation for this ongoing work in our community.

Recipients are chosen by the growing cohort of past Bishop’s Crozier Lifetime Leadership & Service Award recipients and the Nominating and Governance Committee of the CCF Board. Recipients are selected for their notable service to the Catholic charitable, educational and/or evangelical work. The award recognizes specific outstanding initiatives as well as bodies of work and lifetime achievement and is presented annually at the Catholic Community Foundation’s Crozier Gala, in the Diocese of Phoenix.

The honoree or couple is selected based on distinguished service and support of the Catholic community in the Diocese of Phoenix and beyond. The selection committee considers accomplishments, achievements and contributions to qualify this person to receive the Crozier Lifetime Leadership & Service Award based on the results of his or her efforts at the national, diocesan, parish, school and community level. Other at-large services, board memberships, offices held and awards given are also be considered in the CCF’s successful candidate recipient.

Honorees are presented with a hand-cut crystal replica of the Bishop’s crosier designed, created, and imported from Waterford Crystal of Ireland. It is an extraordinarily stunning artistic piece that is meant to reflect the quality, value, and deep beauty of the achievements it represents.

2016 Recipients: Sandy & Jim Bruner

Picture of Sandy and Jim Bruner

For over forty years, Sandy and Jim Bruner have lived in Scottsdale, raised their family and been deeply woven into the civic and spiritual life of the community. Each serving at both the parish and diocesan level they have benefitted the parish of St. Maria Goretti, St. Patrick’s, the diocesan Finance Council, and the Charity and Development Appeal. The Catholic Community Foundation is especially grateful for Jim’s leadership as the Foundation’s first Chairman of the Board of Directors from 1988-1990.

The Bruner’s unwavering involvement in the community has benefitted organizations as diverse as the Pappas School for the Homeless, United Way, Scottsdale Healthcare, the Phoenix Zoo, and the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Legacy. Jim has held a number of elected positions, and as Scottsdale Vice-Major, he was instrumental in securing a major league baseball team for Phoenix – go Diamondbacks! And Sandy and Jim’s love of the culture and history of their regional home translated into founding the Scottsdale Museum of the West.

Consistently supporting excellence in education through Catholic schools and beyond, Jim currently serves as a Trustee Board Member at Drake University. The parents of two adult children and three grandchildren, all of whom have attended Brophy and Xavier, Sandy and Jim continue to participate in and support excellence in education through our Catholic schools and beyond.
